In February 2013 then then composer in residence at Handel House, created a very special set of pieces called ‘badluck birds’ for Consortium5. Inspired by particular British birds which are often seen as bad omens, the piece’s open movement is a dynamic, improvisatory explosion of birdsong called Screech.
Screech became the basis for a unique project for young recorder players from all over London who took part in workshops with Consortium5 and came together for a special concert at St George’s Hanover Square. Each group made their own version of Screech, using extended techniques such as flutter tonguing, singing and wind sounds. You can see hear a version from C5 in this Youtube clip from when the quintet performed at Platform33.
But this was not the end of it! Screech has now been turned into an interactive web game so you too can make your own version of Screech. Check it out at: http://screech.handelhouse.org/
